eu suspends import duties on wheat to ease supply pressures

... in a move to ease eu market pressures, the commission has announced that it is to suspend import duties on low and medium quality wheat and barley from next week until the end of june ... the suspension is a response to "tight supplies in world cereals markets” said the eu, with the preferential tariffs of 12 €/tonne and 16 €/tonne for wheat and barley respectively to be reduced to zero for the volumes permitted under the quota while grain prices have risen worldwide, those in europe have grown particularly fast, inflated by the region's relatively thin export surplus, compared with the us, and its geographical position ... multiple production setbacks in germany, russia and canada compounded by the recent flooding in australian have sorely reduced milling wheat quantities ... and european wheat prices have seen impressive rallying with new contract highs being set by the matif exchange more

danisco to provide relief for grain-dependent food producers

... "in circumstances like these, it is imperative that we recognise the issues our customers face and make the necessary resources available to meet their needs," says torben wiborg jensen, application director at danisco ... bakery and brewing are two of the main food sectors affected by the forecasted price rise due to their high dependence on, particularly, wheat and barley ... "powerbake™ comprises enzymes and enzyme-emulsifier blends developed to raise and optimise the baking performance of standard and poor quality flour, enabling bakers to cut their raw material costs," says inge lise povlsen, bakery group manager ... " in view of the strong link between wheat and gluten prices, bakers' interest in gluten replacement and reduction is expected to increase ... proven solutions from the powerbake™ range can cut gluten addition in white and wholemeal bread by up to 75% at no expense to bread quality ... "high malt prices make a good case for malt replacement by cheaper starch-containing grains, such as barley or maize ... this is where our amylex® and alphalase® enzymes make a difference," states lars boe larsen, brewing group manager more

canada to double wheat sales to china

... china has been a sporadic importer of canadian wheat, buying nearly 2 ... the agreement, mainly for high-quality spring wheat, used in baking, partly reflects poor growing conditions for china's domestic crop, such as drought in the south and cool temperatures in the north, said bruce burnett, director of weather and market analysis for the wheat board ... 2 wheat producer after the european union ... "that's a significant increase in their imports and over our history, they have been a very valuable market for our wheat in western canada ... " the poor growing weather will likely keep china's wheat from reaching its best quality and yield, but not cause a major production shortfall, he said ... but the wheat board will not have trouble finding enough supply for china unless the weather gets even worse, burnett said ... china usually gets most of its imported wheat from australia and the united states, but bigger canadian shipments won't necessarily displace some of those sales, burnett said ... "they're looking for a particular spring wheat quality and we are usually the chief supplier (of that quality) ... " china bought 200,000 tonnes of canadian wheat, durum and wheat flour from august 2009 through april 2010 ... the wheat board, one of the world's largest grain marketers, holds a government-granted monopoly on sales of western canada's wheat and barley more

grdc offers grain-quality workshops

... the grains research and development corporation is funding two new workshops, for agronomists and farm advisers to better understand and communicate to growers the importance of grain quality from the paddock to processor ... the two-day workshops – titled ‘paddock to processor: how farming practice affects your beer and bread’ – will be held in adelaide, south australia, on july 22 and 23 and ballarat, victoria, on august 5 and 6 ... the workshops, supported by viterra, focus on improving grain quality through agronomy and storage as well as understanding processor and end market requirements ... workshop participants will hear from industry experts and decision-makers on a range of topics including: ... achieving maximum grain quality in the paddock, in storage and for processors ... receival standards – how and why they are set at current levels ... how processors measure grain quality and its importance to their end product ... current and emerging wheat and barley markets and products ... genetic and environmental factors impacting grain quality grdc southern regional panel chair david shannon says the workshops are the first technical workshops on grain quality funded by the grdc ... it is becoming more and more important that professionals working with grain growers are able to provide the most up-to-date knowledge and advice in this area,” he said ... “the 2010 grain quality workshops bring together industry experts and decision-makers to outline where the storage of grain on-farm is headed and also the importance of maintaining excellent grain quality to maximise sale opportunities ... ” the two workshops include field trips to local processors, including joe white malting, allied mills and ceretech laboratories, to discover how on-farm agronomy impacts their final product ... presenters include grains quality consultant gerrard mcmullen, feed grains expert john black, grains storage specialist peter botta and dr steve jeffries, wheat classification council more

crop production to fall short of forecasts

... winter wheat and barley crop production is likely to be higher this year despite recent rains ensuring the harvest will not quite meet expectations ... current summer cropping, however, is weaker than last year, with total wheat planting area forecast to decline by nine per cent ... “a lack of rainfall over the summer cropping regions in northern new south wales and southern queensland has resulted in little grain sorghum planting so far,” said dr terry sheales, deputy executive director, abare, on releasing the december issue of the australian crop report ... “conditions deteriorated over spring in western australia, queensland and, in particular, central west and southern new south wales ... cropping regions in western australia were affected by lack of rain toward the end of spring and, as a result, production has been revised down from earlier expectations ... ” partially offsetting these declines were improved growing conditions across cropping regions in south australia and victoria, where average rainfall was recorded over spring ... “however, with harvest still underway in these states and western australia, recent rains may affect the quality of the harvest,” dr sheales advised ... wheat production is estimated at 22 million tonnes, lower than abare’s september forecast, but 5 per cent higher than 2008-09 production ... barley production is estimated at around 8 more

scientists pinpoint short rice gene

... using information from the publicly available rice genome sequence, researchers at the commonwealth scientific and industrial research organisation (csiro) were able to isolate the 'semi-dwarfing' ( sd-1 ) gene, and develop 'perfect' markers to identify it ... team leader, dr wolfgang spielmeyer, claimed that isolating the gene will speed up the process of breeding new rice varieties and help to identify semi-dwarfing genes in other cereal crops like wheat ... according to a csiro statement the semi-dwarf varieties were less likely to fall over and responded better to nitrogen fertilisers ... the csiro scientists claim that the development of a perfect market will fast-track breeding of new rice varieties and enable breeders to screen for the semi-dwarfing gene at a much earlier stage of plant development, saving valuable time and resources ... "we will be able to use our knowledge of the sd-1 gene to study and isolate related gene sequences that are responsible for semi-dwarfing in other cereal crops such as wheat and barley more
